Mayor Marco Aurelio Pérez offers her a reception to congratulate her on the successful season, with an international silver and gold, and to thank her for “the exemplarity she is offering to the new generations of the municipality.”
The young karate fighter from the municipality of San Bartolomé de Tirajana Indira Zúñiga García has been received by the mayor Marco Aurelio Pérez Sánchez together with the Councilor for Sports, Ramón Suárez Ojeda, and the delegate councilor for Education, Culture and Youth, Esther Delgado. They wanted to thank her for the extraordinary performance demonstrated by her in the 2023-2024 season and her important track record of international successes, which are turning her into a sporting and social reference for the neighborhood of the municipality, especially for the new generations.
For the young woman born in El Tablero in 1999, this season has been “very challenging, with world-class championships in the Premier Leagues in Cairo, Morocco, Cyprus, Italy, and the European Championship in Croatia,” she stated. It has been a fruitful year, with a silver medal and his first international gold medal, at the Serie A world circuits of Larnaca (Cyprus) and Motosinhos (Portugal), respectively, in a competition with more than 90 athletes of his category.
Zúñiga has competed in the Kumite discipline of less than 61 kilos since 2021, the year in which he moved to Madrid to train in one of the best Spanish clubs, the Iván Leal Club, directed by the current national coach. There his career began to expand, allowing him to participate in his first world championship in Dubai, where he reached ninth place. Since then she has resided in the Spanish capital, in the High Performance Center (CAR), along with her teammates.
“Life in the CAR is demanding, with training every day, morning and afternoon, for 5 to 6 hours, including physical preparation, karate and rehabilitation sessions. And to that we must add the trips, concentrations with the national team and studies,” he says.
The current number 1 in the national ranking and 20th in the world is a graduate in Social Work. She is currently studying a master's degree in Health Social Work at the Open University of Catalonia, an institution that allows her to combine her studies with her life as a high-performance athlete.
Indira Zúñiga began practicing karate at the age of 5 at the El Tablero Fudoshin Karate Club, under the tutelage of coach Antonio Abrante. “Toni has been essential support throughout my career,” she says.
