San Bartolomé de Tirajana is dying, consumed by an evil that has spread like a plague. Its entrails, once fertile and full of life, are now devoured by the decay of public services. The disease has mutated, adapting to every corner of this Canarian land where Gran Canaria defended itself when it was invaded, infecting the very foundations of its society. It is not a simple cold, but a torrid fever that consumes the vitality of this town, leaving behind a trail of ashes and hopelessness. The agony also illuminates the spiritual crisis in the heart of southern Gran Canaria.

There are those who think that the agony or decline of the South of Gran Canaria began one day when someone started throwing money bills, we assume photocopies, after a motion of censure that took place in the San Bartolomé de Tirajana City Council. In the summer of 2007 there was a big fire here and Morocco offered several of its 16 seaplanes based in Agadir that took just 90 minutes to arrive to fight the flames; But politics got involved and we had to wait for one from Zaragoza to arrive from a fire in Galicia caused by four fans from Las Palmas. It's always Las Palmas. Or did the macabre decision not come from Las Palmas to lock in this August 2024 Road Fataga on the day of the fire in its beautiful palm grove?

Everything arrived late: the town suffered fire damage in 2007. In addition to the destruction of buildings, many plants were burned. The residents made an enormous effort against the fire: the damage was not made invisible, but Fataga was left habitable thanks to the efforts of its neighbors and not those people who come to impose regulations made in Brussels to stop agriculture and the application of common sense. Now it is an ash dump for one of the most important tourist municipalities in Europe.

The fire last Saturday punished the main sources of the town, with more than 100 meters of pipes damaged with losses of thousands of euros and all the water for at least a week, around 52 million liters, mixed with the ashes and seriously damaging agriculture, health of the neighbors and beauty of the town. A psychopathic official has said on the radio that this is good because it regenerates the soil. So that? If they don't let anything be grown.

These events also seriously damage the economy of the interior of Gran Canaria and especially Fataga and Tunte. The Water Mill, a tourist attraction with one of the most important and beautiful palm groves in Europe, is burning again in recovery from a previous fire. In this fire there were no victims or loss of the rural houses of Ecotara, a few meters from the start of the fire, today occupied by 33 immigrant minors, who were evicted. The actions of the emergency resources of the Cabildo, Government of the Canary Islands and San Bartolomé de Tirajana City Council were fast, coordinated and precise, with even the pilots of the helicopters essential for stabilizing the fire risking their lives, thus avoiding further damage. What is not understood is how the GC-60 highway is closed for more than 10 hours. The electrical network also suffered damage, leaving Fataga residents and businesses in the dark this Monday due to the repair of the line.

The residents of Fataga are demoralized by seeing how their town deteriorates little by little, without the competent authorities and organizations not taking into account that Fataga is one of the oldest cultural and picturesque towns in Gran Canaria. We are surrounded by bad people who do not know how to plan a logical future for the people who live in this area. When in 50 years there are no Canarian surnames among the owners of typical houses, we will talk. They are all, as equals.
