Germans living in the south of Gran Canaria rediscover Aldi

Gara Hernandez Tuesday, August 20, 2024

A trickle of Germans and tourists of other nationalities who live in Maspalomas joined the local population this August 19 at the opening of Aldi in Sonneland, the hard discount chain that serves to supply products at logical prices in the local environment and also to the hospitality sector. According to official data from the INE, there are 14.475 Germans residing in the province of Las Palmas, of which 5.615 live in the municipality of San Bartolomé de Tirajana. This means that Germans are the largest foreign population in Gran Canaria, representing almost a quarter (27,4%) of the total foreigners residing on the island.

Is there a difference between the Aldi store in the south of Gran Canaria and those in countries like Germany or Austria? Tourists who buy supplies for their apartments or those who stay in Airbnb-type vacation homes will be able to find an offer mainly from their own brand, about 9 out of 10 products are, and of local origin but with German quality standards. 20% of ALDI's assortment in the Canary Islands comes from more than 50 suppliers in the Canary Islands, who supply more than 360 products grown in the island territory.

Emily Rosberger, media manager at Aldi in Germany, points out that "ALDI's own brands meet the highest quality standards and always convince in direct comparison with products from other brands" and highlights that "this is also demonstrated by tests independent quality tests carried out every month by Stiftung Warentest and ÖKO-Test. Special criteria as well as overall quality are evaluated. ALDI's own brands also achieved good ratings in July 2024.

For example, one thing that the Germans take great care of in the south of Gran Canaria. Staff at the consulting firm Stiftung Warentest tested 15 vegan substitute products. The ALDI brand vegan Wonder Hack received a rating of 2,1 (Good). Vegan minced meat convinces, among other things, with its taste and appearance, because it is particularly close to the desired meat. Stiftung Warentest also tested 29 water products with a high carbon dioxide content. ALDI's own brand also achieved double the results. ALDI water earned a “very good” rating.
