TUI has confirmed this Wednesday that it will use the until now bankrupt Doncaster Sheffield Robin Hood airport for tour operations with the south of Gran Canaria. The prospect of reopening Doncaster Sheffield Airport is to do so in 2025 and has taken an important step forward after being closed since November 2022 due to being unprofitable.
The airport, which ceased operations almost two years ago when its owner, Peel Group, declared it was not commercially viable, is now on the verge of welcoming passengers again. Earlier this year, Doncaster Council secured a new 125-year lease for the site and a new operator is expected to be announced at the end of next month.
Additionally, the airport has been given the green light to receive a substantial subsidy and airlines are expressing their desire to reuse its runways. Last week, three Doncaster MPs met with newly appointed Aviation Minister Mike Kane to discuss reclaiming the airport, The Express reports. Kane has indicated his involvement with the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) in relation to both the reopening of the airport and its airspace, which is essential for aircraft landings and departures.
TUI is one of the airlines planning to resume services from the airport when it reopens, and already expressed its desire earlier this year to use the facilities again. The airline was a regular user of the airport, offering connections to destinations such as Gran Canaria.
