Eléctrica de Maspalomas (Elmasa) confirmed this Wednesday the completion of the comprehensive reform of the frame of module C of the Puerto del Rosario IV desalination plant. This work, carried out for the Cabildo of Fuerteventura in a joint venture with Tagua, has made it possible to increase the nominal production capacity of the plant by 7.200 m³/d and significantly reduce its energy consumption.
All of this has been possible thanks to the talent and dedication of our engineering and workshop team, strictly complying with contractual deadlines. This advance represents a turning point in the island's water emergency, ensuring a safer and more sustainable water supply, especially in the Puerto del Rosario area.
To achieve these objectives, on the one hand, Elmasa has completely remodeled the Reverse Osmosis frame, redesigning the membrane system, based on the new parametric limit of the boron concentration in the permeate allowed by Royal Decree 3/2023, on the other hand. which establishes the technical-sanitary criteria for the quality of drinking water. Being able to increase the boron concentration above 1 mg/L allows the use of high permeability membranes and reducing the operating pressure by more than 8 bar.
Likewise, the brine energy recovery turbine has been replaced with isobaric chamber systems, improving the energy efficiency of the process. All this has been accompanied by a complete renovation of the instrumentation and control system, redesigning the PLC program to adapt it to the new operating conditions, including the automation of the start-up and stop processes in a common collector configuration.
