The plants will prevent the emission of 1.615 tons of CO2 per year
The Minister for Environment, Climate, Energy and Knowledge, Raúl García Brink, highlights that this tourist area of Maspalomas “is positioned as a benchmark in responsible and sustainable tourism”
The Playa del Inglés Energy Community obtained, with the support of the Island Energy Council, one and a half million euros for the installation of photovoltaic panels in nine buildings, through the development of the 'Sustainable Energy Strategy in the Canary Islands', of the 'Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan', belonging to the European Next Generation funds.
These plants will have a total peak power of 1,6 MWp and will generate 2.790 MWh of energy per year, to supply approximately 700 homes. The estimated investment amounts to 1.528.756,42 euros, with an advance payment of 764.378,2 euros.
The Councillor for Environment, Climate, Energy and Knowledge of the Cabildo de Gran Canaria, Raúl García Brink, stated that “this energy community, by integrating renewable energy sources and promoting energy efficiency with a strong citizen commitment, not only strengthens the fight against climate change, but also positions Playa del Inglés as a benchmark in responsible and sustainable tourism”.
This community will reduce its members' energy bills by between 20% and 50%, depending on consumption, and will save 1.615 tons of CO2 emissions per year.
The beneficiary buildings are Rocasul, Timanfaya block 3, Los Molinos apartments, Habitat, and the Eurocenter and El Nilo shopping centres.
In addition, individuals, businesses or SMEs that do not have roofs or roofs capable of accommodating solar panels within a range of two kilometres will be able to join the energy community to benefit from renewable self-generation.
There are currently four local energy community projects in Gran Canaria, in the Arguineguín ravine, in Siete Palmas, in Telde and in Playa del Inglés; and two industrial ones, in Arinaga and in Jinámar.
Recently, the energy community of Siete Palmas received 909.940,65 euros, while those located in the industrial zones of Jinámar and Arinaga received 1,5 and three million euros, respectively, corresponding to this same subsidy.
