MASPALOMAS24H Thursday, September 05, 2024

The control operation carried out in collaboration with the Immigration Brigade and the Citizen Security Unit of the Maspalomas Police Station resulted in the identification of 25 people and the arrest of a drug dealer detected by a dog from the Canine Unit of the Local Police.

The Local Police of the San Bartolomé de Tirajana Town Hall is giving no respite to street vendors of counterfeit products in strategic tourist spots in this municipality. In the last control operation carried out in the vicinity of the Oasis Shopping Centre, in the Faro de Maspalomas, and also in the Anexo II Shopping Centre, the agents intervened and identified 25 people, of whom 8 were finally reported for the illegal development of the activity.

Around thirty officers took part in the operation, which was carried out in collaboration with members of the Immigration and Borders Brigade and the Citizen Security Unit of the Maspalomas National Police Station. The officers in charge of the operation drew up a report on those reported for the fraudulent sale of counterfeit goods and transferred their details to the Labour Inspectorate and Social Security in case they were not registered.

A significant amount of counterfeit products from various prestigious brands were seized from the accused, and an order was issued for their non-return and complete destruction, including around 300 bags, a hundred T-shirts, more than 200 caps, scarves and hairdressing products, among others. The police are investigating the origin and provenance of the seized merchandise.

Something doesn't smell right

In addition, a dog from the Canine Unit of the Local Police also took part in this operation against the street vendors. During the operation carried out in the square of Annex II, Peka, six years old and specialized in the detection of up to 6 prohibited and/or dangerous products, found during the search that the car keys of one of the identified vendors “did not smell right”, and led the police team to a vehicle parked nearby where they found and seized various packages and wrappers of marijuana, cocaine and hashish prepared for street retailing. The owner was informed and arrested, and the car was taken to the Municipal Depot.

This is the second large-scale operation that the Local Police has carried out in the hot spots of illegal street vending in the municipality with the close collaboration of the Immigration and Citizen Security services of the Maspalomas Police Station. The previous one, with similar characteristics to this one, was carried out approximately a year ago, also at the beginning of September, organized in Paseo Costa Canaria, La Charca, the Oasis and Anexo II shopping centers, and in the vicinity of the Lighthouse tower. It resulted in the arrest and identification of 30 people.

The Councillor for Security and Emergencies, José Carlos Álamo, appreciates the collaboration between the different police forces. “We defend and promote this collaboration because the different works that they have been developing as a team are bearing fruit and are a guarantee of security for the municipality, its residents and visitors.”

These forceful and preventive police actions are intended to control and eradicate illegal street vending and to identify and verify the status of regular or irregular residence of vendors in the country.
