The municipality of Agüimes now boasts the largest and most modern skateboarding facility in the Canary Islands . The new Arinaga Skate Park , located within the town's Urban Park, opened to the public this Friday with a skating competition organized by the City Council as part of the Mareas Vivas youth event. Mayor Óscar Hernández and a large group of council members were in attendance.
The 3.279 m² facility was designed by Daniel Yábar, one of the most renowned architects specializing in this type of installation, following a participatory process that incorporated input from local skaters . The project, which cost €590.796, was carried out by the specialized firm Cooping Ramps.
The 2000 m² skate park is sheltered from the prevailing winds by a vegetation-covered slope, specifically designed for this purpose. It features three distinct areas: a skate plaza , a bowl , and a flow park , designed for different skill levels and user groups, yet seamlessly connected by transition ramps that provide continuity and a cohesive feel. The skate plaza incorporates urban elements such as curbs, railings, stairs, and benches, which serve as obstacles for performing street tricks . The bowl , or ramp, features varying heights and depths for more radical skating. The flow park , on the other hand, has curves and transitions at lower heights, allowing for a more surf-like experience.
The facility is optimized to generate the maximum number of possible trajectories, allowing for simultaneous use by up to 25 people. It also features stands to accommodate spectators attending skateboarding exhibitions or competitions . Skateboarding is a popular sport in the Canary Islands, having been included in the official program of the Paris 2024 Olympic Games and confirmed for Los Angeles 2028 as well.
