Recognition of the Ruano and José Reyes sisters will mark the premiere of the Santa Lucía de Tirajana anthem

 

The world windsurfing champions, the sisters Daida and Iballa Ruano Moreno, will be recognised next Friday 13th September as favourite daughters of the municipality in an institutional act in which the businessman José Reyes (known as Pepito Reyes) will also be recognised as an adopted son, posthumously. The institutional act will be held at the Víctor Jara theatre at 20pm, with free admission upon prior collection of the invitation at the Municipal Athenaeum, and during it the official anthem of Santa Lucía de Tirajana will be premiered, which has been composed by the musician Laura Vega. The anthem will be performed by the Gran Canaria Philharmonic Orchestra, which will also perform, together with the timple player Domingo Rodríguez el Colorao, the work 'Zafra', composed by the same author.

 

Laura Vega has composed the official anthem commissioned by the Santa Lucía de Tirajana Town Hall. The composer points out that “the anthem has very familiar lyrics, so that people can easily memorise it, and it mentions the tomato growers, the wind, the landscape, the people and the history of Santa Lucía de Tirajana”. The musical work 'Zafra' will also be presented at the same event, which, according to its author Laura Vega “is a concert for timple soloists and symphony orchestra, based on Canarian folklore, which recognises our traditions and customs”. “The musical work - adds Vega - is inspired by the municipality, because my ancestors came to Vecindario to work in the tomato growers, in recognition of the work of all those people who came to work in harsh conditions, it is also dedicated to Domingo el Colorao who has a very personal way of understanding folklore from the roots”.

 

 

The Gran Canaria Philharmonic Orchestra will be conducted by Rafael Sánchez Araña, the lyrics and music of Zafra are by Laura Vega, and, in addition to the Philharmonic Orchestra and Domingo 'el Colorao', the stage will feature the voices of Manolo Matos and Tania Gil. 

 

The appointments of the Ruano sisters as favourite daughters and Pepito Reyes as adopted son were unanimously approved at the municipal plenary session held on 23 July. The sisters Iballa Ruano Moreno and Daida Ruano Moreno are recognised for “their extraordinary sporting achievements, their dedication to promoting gender equality in sport and their unwavering commitment to the local community and the recognition of Santa Lucía de Tirajana at an international level thanks to its extraordinary sporting record”. The businessman José Reyes, known as Pepito Reyes, is recognised “in addition to being an entrepreneur who created jobs in the municipality, Pepito Reyes stood out for his social involvement with his role and involvement as founder and president of the Vecindario Lions Club, also as founder of Ascoive, collaborator of the Vecindario Red Cross, also as a founding member of the Camilo Sánchez Canarian Foundation and collaborator of the Adown Sur Association”.
