Gambling passion grows as experts warn of risks of overspending

Lotteries have become a significant part of everyday life for many citizens. Quinielas, Bonolotos, and ONCE draws are some of the most popular games, generating both hopes of big prizes and a growing debate about the expenses allocated to this type of betting.

Many residents in the south and south-east of Gran Canaria, which includes municipalities such as Ingenio, Agüimes, Santa Lucía and San Bartolomé de Tirajana, see the lottery as an opportunity to improve their economic situation. In the context of inflation and rising costs of living, many citizens turn to these games as an alternative to obtain quick income.

According to data provided by the State Lottery and Betting Delegation in Gran Canaria, ticket sales in the south-east area have experienced a 15% increase in the last year. Quiniela and Bonoloto are the most popular games, especially among people over 35 years of age, while the ONCE draws continue to be a fundamental pillar, thanks to the social work that supports their prizes.

The data suggests that the citizens of Gran Canaria spend on average between 10 and 30 euros per month on lotteries, a figure that, although apparently moderate, can accumulate throughout the year, affecting other aspects of the family budget.
