Recognition of our seniors and new physical activities at SBT

The Department of the Elderly of the San Bartolomé de Tirajana Town Council has presented today, Thursday 12 September, the new programme of activities and services aimed at the elderly population of the municipality for the 2024/2025 academic year. The event, which took place at the Aeroclub Restaurant, included a lunch for around 180 diners in which tribute was paid to six users of the service who, at over 90 years of age, continue to actively participate in physical activities. 

 

The honourees were Flora Navarro Sánchez, 90 years old, from El Tablero; Leonor Medina Morales, 92 years old, from Tunte; José Fleitas Casiano, 93 years old, from Juan Grande; Otilia Susana Santana Alonso, 91 years old, from Juan Grande; Fanny Aponte, 92 years old, from San Fernando; Pino Navarro Sánchez, 91 years old, from El Tablero. All of them were given a plaque recognising their 'Participation, perseverance and effort in the Physical Education Programme for Senior Citizens' and which were presented by the acting mayor of San Bartolomé de Tirajana, Alejandro Marichal; the councillor for the Elderly and Social Services, Dimas Sarmiento; and the councillor for Citizen Participation, Ruyman Cardoso. 

 

After presenting the plaques to those honoured, Marichal highlighted the work that “you, our elders, have done for the municipality, the legacy you have left with your effort and work for San Bartolomé de Tirajana and which has allowed economic development as well as the improvement of social conditions”, for which reason the first deputy mayor indicated “this tribute is extended to all our elders”. 

 

Following the event, the main new features that the Department for the Elderly is incorporating into the Physical Activities Programme this year were announced. Among them, the incorporation of 90 new places that will allow for increased participation and serve a greater number of people in the municipality. As pointed out by the Councillor for the Elderly, Dimas Sarmiento, “with this renewed programme, the Department reaffirms its commitment to the well-being and quality of life of our elderly, promoting their social integration and active ageing.

 

The programme offers a wide variety of activities designed to promote active and healthy ageing, including physical exercises, memory workshops, computer science, dance, as well as cultural and hiking outings.

 

1 Highlights of the 2024/2025 academic year

 

• Physical activities in different municipal centres such as San Fernando, El Tablero, Juan Grande and Tunte, where physical education, zumba and adapted handball exercises are carried out.

• Memory stimulation, computer science and Tai Chi workshops at various levels.

• Urban and natural hiking, with scheduled routes such as Playa de las Canteras and visits to the Nativity Scene of Sand (December 20), Pajar-Anfi del Mar (January 24), and Tilos de Moya (February 28).

• Special activities such as participation in the Blume International Gymnastics Festival from December 1 to 5 and a recreational and sports meeting in El Tablero on May 9.

 

In addition to the programme of activities, other activities that will take place during the year were presented, highlighting the closest events such as World Alzheimer's Day, on 20 September, under the motto "Deciding in the face of the disease", and the Quality of Life Day with a trip to Granada and Córdoba from 6 to 12 October.
