The Mayor of Mogán, Onalia Bueno, will preside over the formal ceremony this Friday in which the municipality will adopt a plan for the renovation of 200 homes. To do so, the Minister of Public Works, Housing and Mobility of the Government of the Canary Islands, Pablo Rodríguez, and the director of the Canarian Housing Institute, Antonio Ortega, will travel to the south of Gran Canaria. Bueno and Rodríguez will visit a group of homes located at Calle El Drago, 50, which will be renovated.
In 2023, the Mogán City Council launched its first housing plan, which includes the construction of VPO in the neighbourhoods of Arguineguín, El Horno, Motor Grande and Veneguera by 2027, thus benefiting the most vulnerable families. Onalia Bueno maintains that "it is a challenge that this Government group has set itself due to the failure of the public housing policies of the Government of the Canary Islands" during the PSOE era. In August 2020, the plots of land adjacent to the Social Services building in Arguineguín, one in El Horno and another in Veneguera, were transferred to Visocan, dependent on the Government of the Canary Islands, precisely for the construction of social housing. An issue that is on Pablo Rodríguez's roof on land such as Arguineguín. In Arguineguín, as mentioned, the land is located in the Pino Seco area, specifically on Damasco Street next to Social Services. A building with 21 apartments and their corresponding parking spaces will be built there.
Mogán has decided to take the reins directly, requesting the reversal of the transfers to Visocan, which has accepted those corresponding to El Horno and Veneguera. The strategy undertaken by the City Council has begun with the realization of the geotechnical and topographical technical studies and the drafting of projects in Veneguera, El Horno, Arguineguín and Puerto Rico. The main objective is “that all the residents of Mogán have access to decent housing and avoid the exodus to neighbouring municipalities”, said Bueno, who has had the support of María de la Salud Gil, president of the Association of Construction Entrepreneurs (AECP) of Las Palmas.
But these will not be the only new VPO that Arguineguín will add in the next four years. In Loma de Pino Seco, where there are already several developments of these homes, the entity that owns the land has agreed with the City Council the construction of 60 homes of 70 square meters with storage room, 68 parking spaces for cars and 12 for motorcycles. Bueno has reported that the Partial Plan of Loma de Pino Seco is very close to being approved, which will allow the release of the land for the construction of these homes. Also the completion of the drafting of the project by the company. "We hope that the works begin this year," he said, emphasizing that it will be the private entity that will build the VPO developments and that the City Council will manage them.
