European travel agencies and tour operators with interests in the south of Gran Canaria have asked business organisations and tourism promotion authorities to send a message of calm in response to data from the National Geographic Institute (IGN) on the dozens of earthquakes in the area of the Enmedio volcano, between Tenerife and Gran Canaria, with magnitudes between 1,6 and 2,6. "The European press is also playing at attracting digital audiences and there is nothing better than a logical doubt, the employers' association should send a message of caution," a businessman from Playa del Inglés in the industry told Maspalomas24H on Tuesday at an event in Las Palmas de la Mesa del Tabaco.
"This is not acceptable, in the Canary Islands they do not take into account what their industry is," a sales executive from a travel agency in Magdeburg, Germany, told Maspalomas24H. In addition, seven of the earthquakes occurred within an interval of just over 25 minutes and at great depths, between 26 and 38 kilometres. On Tuesday afternoon, another earthquake of magnitude 3,8 was recorded, located north of Gran Canaria, in Santa María de Guía, felt by the population in several municipalities on the island and at a depth of 18 kilometres.
Last year was one of the most intense in terms of earth movements in the last decade in the Canary Islands. This was reported by the National Geographic Institute, which highlighted that in January 2023, during Friday, January 21, 38 earthquakes occurred - 74 according to the automatic systems - in the Canary Islands, specifically between the islands of Gran Canaria and Tenerife, where the Enmedio volcano is located.
Although the number of earthquakes may seem overwhelming, the reality is different, as their impact on the population was minimal, or practically non-existent. But this does not mean that these earth movements are not important, since they respond to a phenomenon unknown to almost everyone and which is called a seismic swarm. To understand this phenomenon, it is necessary to know, first of all, what it is. A seismic swarm is made up of a set of tremors of a certain intensity that occur consecutively and repeatedly over a period of time, but which do not respond to any type of analysable pattern or order, nor do they correspond to a large earthquake.
