The Civil Guard intercepted the driver of a vehicle with drugs hidden in a double bottom when he left the ship in the port of Agaete

On August 24, the Civil Guard in Gran Canaria arrested a 64-year-old man, as the alleged perpetrator of a crime against public health – drug trafficking – for concealing 1.129 grams of cocaine and more than 30.000 euros in a hidden cache in the vehicle he was driving in the town of Agaete.

Knowledge of the facts

The Civil Guard became aware of the events on 24 August, when, in the exercise of the powers of the State Security Forces and Corps and the control of fiscal protection and control of illicit drug trafficking, by different units of the Civil Guard of Santa María de Guía, supported by the Canine Service, a device was established to verify vehicles and people in the port of Agaete, coinciding with the arrival of several ferries from Santa Cruz de Tenerife.

During the service carried out by the agents and during the control of one of the vehicles that was inspected, the dog of the Canine Service marked the possible location of drugs inside the cabin, so it was carried out in depth by the agents. After an hour of searching, they managed to locate a false bottom installed in the vehicle, in which four packages were transported. Once unsealed, it was possible to verify that they corresponded: three of them with bundles of bills of various values, reaching a total amount of more than thirty thousand (30.000) euros; while the other package contained a white powdery substance, to which a drug test reagent was applied with which it was possible to determine that it was cocaine, weighing a total of 1.129 grams.

All the packages found were vacuum-packed and had been previously treated with substances with very strong odours, in what is believed to have been an attempt to prevent or hinder detection by dogs in the event of a police check. This attempt was unsuccessful when the agents of the canine unit present immediately detected the package.

The sole occupant of the vehicle was arrested and the corresponding proceedings were initiated by the Investigation Area of the Main Post of Santa María de Guía.

The detainee was placed at the disposal of the Court on Duty, which ordered his remand in custody pending trial.
