The car rental company Avis and Top Car Auto Reisen have been the rent-a-car companies that have won the most space in the competition launched by Aena for the leasing of the car rental business, with facilities and parking spaces at Gran Canaria Airport. Aena launched the offers for the largest rent-a-car competition in the world last April, with more than 21.500 spaces for rental vehicles without a driver in 38 airports in the Aena network in Spain. In Gran Canaria, Avis and TopCar have obtained a highly competitive position to serve the tourists coming to the south of Gran Canaria.
A total of 21 companies have submitted bids, all of which are international leaders in the sector, as well as local companies: Autotransporte Turístico Español, SA; AVIS Alquile un Coche, SA; Record-Go Alquiler Vacaciones, SAU; Paylesscar, SA; Europcar IB, SA; Centauro Rent a Car, SLU; Hertz de España, SL; Canary Islands Car, SLU (CICAR); Anibal y German, SL; Proa Rent a Car, SL; OK Mobility, SLU; Special Price Auto Reisen, SL; Autos Cabrera Medina, SL; OK Mobility Islas Canarias, SL; Complementos del Automóvil, SL; Record Go Canarias, SLU; Alquiler de Vehículos Autos Bamir, SL; Sicily By Car, SPA; Topcar RAC, SLU; Goldcar Spain, SL; and Sixt Rent a Car, SLU.
The process designed by Aena has been a flexible tender adapted to the different profiles of rent a car operators: both the major international leaders in the sector, as well as the operators that manage the activity in airports at a local level. In this way, Aena has managed to meet the diverse needs and experiences that passengers demand in the different airports in the network regarding this service.
In the Aena tender, a total of 4.350 parking spaces were offered in the eight Canary Islands airports, of which 4.289 were awarded, which are shared among the winning companies, including TopCar, which will occupy 17 percent, having obtained 744 spaces for the next five years of leasing, according to the car rental company in a press release. Facilities such as customer service offices, aprons and spaces for cleaning, as well as for vehicle maintenance, "essential for the development of the rent a car activity" were also offered. In these cases, the company TopCar obtains 19 percent of the spaces in the Canary Islands airports.
