Canarian Hotel Schools (Hecansa) and the Maritime Fishing Professional Training Institute of the capital of Gran Canaria signed a collaboration agreement on Wednesday, fully funded by Next Generation funds, to implement training aimed at obtaining a professional certificate in maritime transport activities. A program that will allow students to train, among other profiles, as seafaring chefs. Training to obtain the professional seafaring chef certificate from Hecansa.
The CEO of Hecansa, Paola Plasencia, explained that "the training itinerary has been designed to cover new professions, such as seafaring chef or seafaring fisherman." She explained that young people can enroll from the age of 16 and that the classes include 260 practical hours and 213 theoretical hours. The Minister of Tourism and Employment, Jéssica de León; the CEO of Hecansa, Paola Plasencia; the director of the Canary Islands Employment Service (SCE), María Teresa Ortega, and the director of the institute, Juan Antonio Socorro, have highlighted that the students will be able to access training in a reference center in the Canary Islands, with all the material and means at the students' disposal.
"This innovative agreement meets the demand of the fishing sector, not only for training but also for professionalization, since it suffers from a problem of lack of generational replacement," said De León, who also highlighted the work being carried out by the Ministry to detect professional profiles that are in high demand in the Canary Islands, but which are little known by young people. For his part, Juan Antonio Socorro pointed out that the agreement represents "support for the fishing and tourism sector and opens up a range of possibilities for new training that until now have been abandoned, linked to both fishing and passenger boats." In this sense, he explained that the sector has a great demand, but it is complex because it requires qualifications and professionalization.
