Handing over of keys to 16 public housing units in Ingenio

The Minister of Public Works, Housing and Mobility of the Government of the Canary Islands, Pablo Rodríguez, has handed over the keys to 16 public housing units located in the El Cristo neighbourhood, in the municipality of Ingenio, in Gran Canaria, after more than 9 years without doing so in the province of Las Palmas.

At the event, which was also attended by the director of the Canarian Housing Institute, Antonio Ortega, and the mayor of Ingenio, Vanesa Martín, Pablo Rodríguez stressed that “this delivery reaffirms our commitment to the right to decent housing for the most vulnerable Canarians in the archipelago, improving their living conditions by offering them a safe and decent home. This event is part of a broader plan to reduce the housing deficit and respond to the growing social needs in terms of public housing.”

“Today we are taking a historic and necessary step. Gran Canarian society, and the Canary Islands in general, cannot wait any longer. Everyone has the right to access decent housing and to be able to start their life project with all the guarantees. Since we began this legislature, we have set ourselves the main objective of doing everything in our power to speed up the processes and articulate different mechanisms that would favour the placing of more housing on the market,” he said.

“We are committed to our people, to change their lives, and also so that the new generations have more and better opportunities for the future,” he concluded.

For her part, the Mayor of Ingenio, Vanesa Martín, said that “we cannot but thank the Government of the Canary Islands. We will work hand in hand with them and always ask for more, because there are many families in this municipality and they cannot doubt that we will fight to find more land so that there are not 16,8 and 12 but as many homes as needed. We all deserve a roof over our heads and a hot plate of food. It is a commitment and we cannot look the other way.”
