The Institution points out the "urgent need" to expropriate, in order to undertake the 'Special Territorial Plan for the public transport corridor with its own infrastructure and guided mode between Las Palmas de Gran Canaria and Maspalomas'
The Cabildo of Gran Canaria, through its Department of Finance and Emergencies, has started a process to provide 16,6 million euros to the Single Transport Authority, with the aim of expropriating the land necessary for the construction of the Gran Canaria Train, which will link Las Palmas de Gran Canaria and Maspalomas. The approval of this extraordinary credit will be debated in the Cabildo Plenary Session on September 27, using liquid Treasury surpluses.
The project, considered of great importance to improve public transport, will be managed by Ferrocarriles de Gran Canaria SAU in collaboration with Ineco, following all the legal requirements for expropriations. The report prepared highlights the urgency of the expropriation after the imminent approval of the Environmental Impact Statement (DIA) and underlines that a delay in financing would affect the activities planned for 2024, which is why this credit is required.
This project not only promises benefits in social, economic and environmental sustainability, but is also aligned with European and national mobility strategies. The train will bring speed and efficiency to island transport, helping to reduce road congestion, and is estimated to generate a positive economic impact of more than 5.500 billion euros, creating 25.000 jobs and representing a significant contribution to the Canary Islands' GDP.
