From a brand of cleaning products “Kelly” that was common in hotels, to being used as a nickname for chambermaids in the hospitality industry
The hospitality and tourism federations of UGT and CCOO have asked the employers' associations of the sector to initiate the procedure to reduce the retirement age of chambermaids to 60 years, arguing that these workers perform exceptionally arduous and unhealthy work. The unions had already put forward this proposal in 2021 and support their request with alarming data: 95,9% of chambermaids suffer from anxiety, 70% suffer from muscle pain in multiple areas of the body, and 71,5% need medication for pain and stress.
The employers' associations in the tourism sector, such as Hostelería de España and the Spanish Confederation of Hotels and Tourist Accommodation, have shown their willingness to analyse the proposal, although they recognise its complexity. For UGT and CCOO, this measure would not only be an act of justice to improve the living conditions of female workers, but would also favour greater generational renewal in companies and reduce absenteeism.
