The test will allow testing the system of warning the population in case of emergency by sending a message that will be received on their mobile phones.
The exercise is organised by the General Directorate of Emergencies with CECOES 112 in collaboration with the Island Council and the 21 town councils.
People who receive the alert will have access to a survey that aims to evaluate the effectiveness of this communication tool of the National Civil Protection System, already tested on other islands and points of the Archipelago.
The alert message that will be launched this Thursday, between 10.00:12.00 and XNUMX:XNUMX, can also be received in English if the mobile phone is configured in any language other than Spanish.
This Thursday, September 26, between 10:00 and 12:00, Gran Canaria will be testing the ES-Alert emergency alert system, organized by the Canary Islands Government. The system has already been tested on other islands and municipalities, allowing the population to become familiar with this type of alert. During the test, people within the coverage area will receive a text message on their mobile phones, accompanied by a beep and vibration.
The message will be broadcast from CECOES 112 and may also reach boats near the coast. Reception of the alert will depend on mobile coverage and the status of the phone (on or off). In addition, people who have their mobile phone set to English will receive the message in that language. The test mainly covers Gran Canaria, but due to the range of the antennas, it could also reach areas of Tenerife and Fuerteventura.

The aim of ES-Alert is to alert the population in case of emergencies such as fires, floods or volcanic eruptions. It does not require installing applications or registering. This test is part of the ongoing efforts to improve the effectiveness of the system, which has already been used in real situations such as the fires in La Palma and Tenerife last year.
