70-year-old man arrested for sexual assaults on buses in Gran Canaria

MASPALOMAS24H Tuesday, September 24, 2024

His actions were reflected on social media, so far four different victims have been counted and it has been possible to verify that the author used the transport pass about 15 times a day from San Telmo Station and the northern route of the island.

The Civil Guard has urged the transport company to withdraw the bus voucher in order to prevent further crimes of this nature.

The Civil Guard of Gran Canaria has arrested this morning a 70-year-old man for the alleged authorship of four crimes of sexual assault committed inside the buses that operate on the route between Las Palmas de Gran Canaria and the northern part of the island. The assaults would have occurred on different dates since September 13, 2024, with a total of four complaints registered so far. The incidents occurred inside public transport that operates in several locations: one in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, two in Arucas and one in Guía.

The first complaint was filed on September 19, when a woman reported that, when she got on a bus at a stop in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria heading to Gáldar, the detainee sat next to her and began to caress her knee and thigh.

This behaviour was corroborated by subsequent complaints, which revealed a pattern of behaviour on the part of the alleged perpetrator. It was also found that he used the transport pass around 15 times a day from San Telmo Station and the northern route of the island, which is why the Civil Guard urged the transport company to withdraw the bus pass in his name in order to avoid a greater number of attacks.

The modus operandi of the detainee consisted of sitting next to the victims on public transport to make inappropriate touches and advances, and the Civil Guard has not ruled out the possibility that there may be more people affected.

The Civil Guard launched an exhaustive investigation after receiving the first complaint, which led to the receipt of three additional complaints. One of these complaints has been forwarded to the National Police Force, given that the incident occurred in its demarcation.

All of this resulted in their identification and subsequent arrest in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, with the appropriate proceedings being carried out and they will be placed at the disposal of the Investigating Court number one of Arucas in the next few hours.
