The State Meteorological Agency (AEMET) has issued a warning for Gran Canaria, indicating a significant rise in temperatures in the south-east and south of the island since Thursday 3 October. During this period, maximum temperatures could be around 34 ºC in areas such as the midlands of the south and east of the island. Minimum temperatures, meanwhile, will not fall below 22 ºC in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria.
The rise in temperatures will begin to be felt throughout the day, with maximum temperatures of around 34-35°C in areas of the southeast and south, especially in coastal and mid-mountain areas. The heat will be stifling, especially in the time slot from 12:00 to 17:00.
Calima and strong winds, in addition to high temperatures, light haze is expected at high levels, mainly affecting the peaks. The trade wind will blow strongly, reaching gusts of up to 70 km/h on the southeastern slopes of Gran Canaria and breezes will predominate on the southwestern coasts, which could increase the feeling of mugginess.
Due to the risk of heat, the population is urged to take extreme precautions, especially in the areas of greatest risk such as the southeast of the island, where the highest temperatures will be recorded between Friday and Saturday. The AEMET has activated yellow warnings on several islands in the archipelago due to these adverse conditions, recommending avoiding prolonged exposure to the sun and staying well hydrated.
