Nueva Canarias has confused Fernando Ríos Rull with Coalición Canaria for having been appointed as manager of the collection company in the south of Gran Canaria, Emursa, saying that it is a political position. Indeed, at one time he was a high-ranking member of CC but his last militancy, which would maintain a small family stake in the oil company Disa, has as its last antecedent Podemos in 2015. He is the inventor of the term canarista which has the surname NC, that is, Bloque Canarista.
Ríos left Coalición Canaria in 2015 due to ideological differences with the then nationalist candidate for the Presidency of the Government of the Canary Islands, Fernando Clavijo, whom he criticized for drifting towards positions close to those defended by the Popular Party. Three weeks later, specifically on January 30, he would present his resignation as commissioner for the Development of Self-Government and Institutional Relations of the Government of the Canary Islands, reports Canarias Ahora.
The arrival of Ríos to Gran Canaria is not a coincidence. He is the president of Canarismo y Democracia, an organisation that has defended the reunification of nationalism in recent years, and announced its new board of directors on Monday. He is a jurist, a university professor at ULL and a historical exponent of Canarian nationalism. His experience as a commissioner for the development of self-government is combined with his membership of the Advisory Council of the Canary Islands. In addition, he is a well-known jurist, specialising in issues such as the Autonomous Statute and the recognition of Canarian waters.
After that departure, the professor from the University of La Laguna went to Podemos, which at that time was something of several ideologies and not the communist decadence that it is now. Then the sectarian apparatus of the Commission of Democratic Guarantees of Podemos in the Canary Islands invalidated the candidacy of Fernando Ríos to run in the primary elections of the party to the regional Parliament on the Podemos Auténtico ticket. The former member of Coalición Canaria appealed the decision to the state Commission of Guarantees but the then party of Pablo Iglesias revalidated the vote. Ríos' foray into Podemos had been received with suspicion by the regional leadership. The former senior official of the regional Government was endorsed by the Podemos circle of Adeje.
