“The Rally that Forged the Present of Motorsport in the Canary Islands”

Maspalomas24h Saturday, October 12 from 2024

This iconic competition, which recently celebrated its 50th anniversary, will take place on October 25 and 26, with registration closing scheduled for just one week.

Registrations for the next round of the BP Rally Championship in Las Palmas have been open since October 1: the Maspalomas Rally, which will take place on October 25 and 26. This event has established itself as one of the most important events on the calendar, and will be key in this exciting final sprint of the season, with three rallies in just over a month and almost all the provincial titles and promotional cups still to be decided. The “Maspa”, as it is popularly known, is a historic event in Canarian motorsport, impossible to ignore, as it has played a fundamental role in the evolution of the sport on the islands.

The Maspalomas Rally, which began in 1974, is a race that today would be considered a real adventure. In its early days, competitors faced two intense days of competition with crazy routes, with hardly any rest, alternating between dirt and asphalt sections, both during the day and at night. A format that is far from today's rallies, which are more compact, with sections that are repeated several times and concentrated in a single day.

For this edition, the event organiser Escudería Maspalomas has maintained the structure of last year, which benefits the teams that already participated in the 50th edition. The stages will be the same, simplifying the preparation for the rally and giving competitors the opportunity to optimise their performance.

One of the most significant milestones in the history of this rally was its inclusion in the European Championship in 1981, which attracted drivers competing in the World Rally Championship to Maspalomas, as well as figures from the Spanish Championship. The rally was part of the national competition for several seasons between the late 70s and early 80s, and has maintained its prestige to the present day, celebrating its 50th anniversary last year.

This rally has been the seed for other events in the Canary Islands, all of which are still ongoing, demonstrating the growth and vitality of motorsport in the islands. In addition, the sport has reached new heights, standing out at national and European level, and next year, the Canary Islands will position itself on the world stage with the arrival of the WRC for the first time.

Registration for this edition of the BP Championship in Las Palmas can be done through the VMRM platforms and the official website of the rally, until Thursday, October 17 at 14:XNUMX p.m. The program, route book and regulations of the event are already available on these sites. Among the main novelties of this edition, the Escudería Maspalomas has highlighted the following points:

    • The route will be practically identical to that of the 2023 edition (50th anniversary), although the show section has been eliminated and the Ayagaures section will return to its short version of 7 km.

    • Due to the installation of the “Circo del Sol” in the Meloneras area, the rally will have to move its headquarters to the facilities of the Maspalomas Stadium, where the organization and the assistance area will be located.

    • Technical inspections will be carried out in the sports hall, specifically on the San Fernando basketball courts.
