The Natalie project seeks innovative alternatives to address the water crisis caused by climate change
The Maspalomas Gran Canaria Consortium, within the framework of the European Natalie project, where it collaborates with the Cabildo de Gran Canaria, the San Bartolomé de Tirajana Town Council and the Canaragua company, has actively participated in the workshop dedicated to finding solutions to the problems of rainwater pollution that affect the surroundings of the Charca de Maspalomas.
During the event, held at the Tony Gallardo Park, various initiatives were promoted to implement nature-based solutions that manage rainwater and prevent pollutants from directly reaching the pond.
The workshop focused on addressing one of the most critical problems for the Charca area: the pollution of stormwater caused by heavy rains. Key actions were discussed and presented to improve drainage infrastructure and reduce the polluting waste that reaches this space, especially during possible storms that may recurrently affect the area.
The solutions proposed included the use of more efficient and sustainable drainage systems, which the Maspalomas Consortium will promote through the Impulsa Maspalomas initiative, as well as the implementation of pilot projects to test technologies that improve water quality.
The pilot test will involve testing improvements to the infrastructure for pumping, channelling, storing and distributing reclaimed water. The initiative seeks to increase the use of reclaimed water in the irrigation of green areas and tourist gardens, creating a green space that manages rainwater and retains pollutants before they reach the pond. In addition, this measure will promote sustainability and boost the circular economy.
Developing participatory solutions
The NATALIE project focuses on developing participatory public-private collaboration solutions to address the risks and impacts of climate change. In the Canary Islands, one of the key study points of the European project, there are studies and initiatives in both Tenerife and Fuerteventura, and now also in Gran Canaria, specifically in San Bartolomé de Tirajana.
This scientific initiative seeks alternatives to address the water crisis resulting from climate change through nature-based solutions, such as wetlands and water runoff that, in addition to improving water quality and biodiversity, protect natural landscapes from flooding.
