The Maspalomas Gran Canaria Consortium, with the support of Canaragua in line with a European project, confirmed on Tuesday that within the framework of the European Natalie project, it will study the use of more efficient and sustainable drainage systems to test technologies that improve water quality.
The pilot test will involve testing improvements to the infrastructure for pumping, channelling, storing and distributing reclaimed water. The initiative seeks to increase the use of reclaimed water in the irrigation of green areas and tourist gardens, creating a green space that manages rainwater and retains pollutants before they reach the pond. In addition, this measure will promote sustainability and boost the circular economy.
The Charca de Maspalomas suffers from stormwater pollution caused by heavy rains and improving the drainage infrastructure and reducing the polluting waste that reaches this space, especially during possible storms that may repeatedly affect the area, is key to consolidating this public space.
The European project Natalie focuses on developing participatory public-private collaboration solutions to address the risks and impacts of climate change. This scientific initiative seeks alternatives to address the water crisis caused by climate change through nature-based solutions, such as wetlands and water runoff that, in addition to improving water quality and biodiversity, protect natural landscapes from flooding.
