The internal battle in Nueva Canarias between the old and new guard has its local leaders in the south of the island confused. While Mogán is on the side of Antonio Morales and Teodoro Sosa, mayors who generate the majority of votes to control the Cabildo of Gran Canaria, little is known about what the local leader Samuel Henríquez thinks except that he is playing on three different sides in the hope of positioning himself on the winning side.
The graduate in Marine Sciences and regional deputy of Nueva Canarias, Carmen Hernández, sent a message this Tuesday to sailors and critics of Nueva Canarias from San Mateo, Gáldar and Agüimes to say that respect is very useful in relations between colleagues of the same party. In an interview with El Espejo Canario on Radio Sol Maspalomas, Hernández said that her party must get out of the crisis in a "consensual" way due to "the criticism of some mayors, something that should be done, in her opinion, without vetoing people."
He indicated that the solution to the party's situation involves an agreement in which "there are no winners or losers" and that means that certain people are not vetoed. He recalls that the party has been formed around many sensitivities "and it has gone very well for us." He believes that the project has to be thought out within the organization itself, where there are "valid cadres" and, today, a president like Román Rodríguez "who knows the Canary Islands like no one else." He hopes that the council at the end of October will approve the date of the congress for the year 2025.
Last September, Antonio Morales positioned himself for the first time in the crisis that has opened up within Nueva Canarias, on the side of the group of mayors and municipal leaders of the party in Gran Canaria who have raised their voices in recent months calling for a renewal of the leadership, led since its foundation by Román Rodríguez. This group that seeks the renewal of the party leadership is led by the island vice president and mayor of Gáldar, Teodoro Sosa, and also includes among its ranks the former mayor of Santa María de Guía. Morales has assured that Nueva Canarias “is stunned” and “overwhelmed by its internal crisis” and has also regretted that the party leadership has not acted earlier and responded to this situation “with greater speed and force”.
