The south of Gran Canaria and Las Palmas have something in common: the streets are cleaned by a Mexican company that used to be Spanish and is called FCC Medio Ambiente. In Las Palmas there are protests this October because the streets are a mess. San Bartolomé de Tirajana has decided to stagger the contracts and has issued two contracts this October: supply of containers and the provision of the separate waste collection service.
The estimated value of the contract is 7,4 million euros and the base tender budget is 5,4 million. Companies with special employment centres will win if they submit a logical economic offer. In addition to the Mexicans who currently manage the waste in the south of Gran Canaria, the municipal technical services, where the specifications are provided, are expecting the presence of Prezero, Pérez Moreno of Javier Pérez Zúñiga, Acciona, Sacyr and AZ of Jorge Álvarez. FCC Medio Ambiente in a joint venture with a Lopesan company has the contract for the south of Gran Canaria, one of the most profitable in Spain for beach cleaning and unforeseen activities. The subsidiary of the group chaired by Esther Alcocer Koplowitz but with the Mexican Carlos Slim as owner has just closed a 600 million euro issue with which it finances the development of environmental projects and will support the purchase of companies with which it consolidates its important foreign business.
FCC Servicios Medio Ambiente, the holding company that concentrates FCC's urban and environmental services activities, expects to reach 2.000 billion euros in turnover in international markets next year. The strong expansion plan launched in this sector by the group chaired by Esther Alcocer Koplowitz estimates that international markets will contribute a gross operating profit of over 400 million, while the business portfolio of the area will be around 5.000 billion in foreign markets alone. The company has more than 800 waste management facilities, of which 220 are environmental complexes dedicated to treatment and recycling, including 11 energy recovery plants with a capacity of 3,2 million tonnes per year and 380 megawatts (MW) of non-fossil electricity.
