A boat with 231 migrants arrived on its own to the dock of Arguineguín in Gran Canaria and three of them were transferred to the hospital without serious condition
The recent arrival of a cayuco with 231 migrants on the coast of Gran Canaria has once again brought to light the collapse of the reception system in the Canary Islands. Of the people on board, 58 were minors, a fact that highlights the increase in young people embarking on dangerous journeys, further saturating an already overwhelmed system.
According to the minister, the more than 5.000 minors currently under the care of the Canary Islands Government are being cared for, but the system is “overextended” and the situation worsens with each new arrival. In the current month alone, the arrival of more than 460 minors has been recorded, which It represents almost one in six migrants that arrive at the islands arriving at the archipelago in that period.
Despite efforts to increase the number of reception centres on the islands, from 20 to 81 during this legislative period, the maximum capacity of the system has more than doubled its maximum capacity.
In light of this situation, local authorities have insisted on the need to approve a reform of the immigration law that would allow for the compulsory redistribution of minors.
