Impact of the transport strike in Gran Canaria: incidents and service disruptions

MASPALOMAS24H Monday, October 28, 2024

Those affected are mainly those who depend on public transport for their daily travel, causing significant delays and complications also in the tourist area.

The transport strike will take place on November 11, 28 and 29, and December 5 and 9. If an agreement is not reached, it could be extended indefinitely from December 23.

All drivers who were required to cover minimum services have returned to work (except for two drivers at Guaguas Municipales who have declared health reasons for not returning to work, as stated), according to the Sole Transport Authority of Gran Canaria (AUTGC).

A significant decrease in the frequency of bus services has particularly affected peak times. Users have expressed their frustration at the lack of alternatives and the long waits at bus stops, a situation that has also impacted the tourism sector, making access to the main hotel and leisure areas difficult.

Regarding the points that, in principle, could be more contentious in the island's public transport network (San Telmo Station, Airport, mobility between the lower and upper areas of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, due to the volume of passengers moving in these places), it is noted that they are operating with a certain normality in the context of a strike, with some logical 'impact' due to some full bus that does not stop because its capacity is full and it is necessary to wait for the next one, as well as some other incidents. Regarding the performance of the workers' representatives, committees have been organized whose work has been mainly informative.

In other parts of the island, the AUTGC indicates that in some municipalities there have been more people who have not been able to travel normally, since with fewer services due to the strike and the high demand that has occurred in the last two years due to the subsidy of public road passenger transport, the passenger places established by the minimum services have not been able to meet the demand at peak times.

Both Global and Guaguas Municipales offer updated information on their websites about the progress of the strike and the minimum services offered.
