Dozens of workers at the Hotel Maspalomas Dunas speak out in defence of their labour rights and against the precarious conditions that affect a large part of the tourist industry in the Canary Islands
Today, Wednesday 30 October, UGT-affiliated workers at the Hotel Maspalomas Dunas, part of the Dunas Group, demonstrated demanding decent working conditions and fair treatment in one of the key sectors of the Canarian economy. The demonstration took place from 10:00 to 11:30 in Campo Internacional, in front of the hotel bungalows, in the tourist heart of Maspalomas.
According to union sources, the staff gathered to protest against “degrading, contemptuous and discriminatory treatment” by the hotel management and pointed out several critical points in their demands, including:
• Decent working conditions and respectful treatment
• Salary increase according to the responsibility of the position
• Reduction of workloads through more staff hiring
• Comprehensive care for physical and mental occupational risks
• Respect for labour rights and improved dialogue with trade union representatives
The protesters also strongly criticised the attitude of some managers in the industry, whom they accused of acting like "brilliants" who organise work without considering the needs of employees.
Following this demonstration, it has been announced that the protests will continue in the coming days in other establishments of the Dunas Group and in different hotels in the tourist sector in the Canary Islands. UGT affirms that it will continue to inform about future demonstrations, with the aim of maintaining the pressure and achieving the necessary improvements for workers in the Canary Islands tourist sector.
