He left a profound legacy in journalism, teaching and community service in Gran Canaria. His commitment to peace and multicultural coexistence made Maspalomas a symbol of unity and respect.

Andrés Barriales Ardura, a journalist at heart, had a career that transcended borders and generations. From the beginning, his vocation for communication led him to study Theology in Salamanca and, later, Journalism at the University of Navarra. Soon, his words and voice found an echo at the Cope radio station, where he dedicated 35 years with unwavering dedication, culminating in recognition with the Ondas Prize in 1977. It was also in teaching where his generous spirit shone, teaching at the Official School of Tourism in Madrid and leaving an indelible mark on each student, to whom he not only imparted knowledge, but also values.

His commitment to the Rotary Club was an extension of his love for humanity and his spirit of service. In the Rotary environment, Andrés Barriales found a space to expand his vision of a united and peaceful world. With dedication and humility, he promoted initiatives that sought to improve the lives of those around him. His colleagues and friends in Rotary fondly remember his sincere smile, his ability to listen, and his conviction that a better world was possible if everyone contributed their best. Peace and solidarity were more than words for him; they were principles that would guide each of his actions and projects.

Maspalomas, the land that welcomed his dream of peace, will always remember him. Andrés Barriales saw in Maspalomas a place where cultural diversity and tolerance flourished, and decided that this municipality could be an example of peace. Moved by the history of the first Ecumenical Temple in Playa del Inglés, he proposed that Maspalomas become a Rotary City of Peace. His dream was enthusiastically welcomed by the authorities and the community, who today recognize in him a tireless defender of harmony and understanding. The peace that he dreamed of and worked for in life will be the legacy that his memory will leave in every corner of this municipality.
