The Cabildo of Gran Canaria said on Monday that it has agreed not to declare the 'Lomo Gordo II' Photovoltaic Solar Park to be of public and social interest, an action referred by the San Bartolomé de Tirajana City Council and promoted by the commercial entity Doctor Chil Industrial, a company of the Conde de la Vega Grande holding company, because "it is incompatible" with the future Maspalomas Ecomuseum Park, which is considered "a strategic operation for the diversification and requalification of the offer of complementary facilities on the Island and, in particular, of the Southern Coast Tourist Zone."
This agreement contravenes another agreement of the Department of Ecological Transition and Energy of the Government of the Canary Islands based in Tenerife from February 2024, which declares "the works necessary" for the execution of the project of 1 MW of nominal power, 2.880 photovoltaic panels, to be of general interest. The Government gave its green light for "the contribution to compliance with the forecasts of energy planning (the fulfillment of the power target for the Gran Canaria electrical system of 264,6 MW, with respect to photovoltaic energy, is still far away)."
On April 17, 2024, the Cabildo said no to the project; but the Government of the Canary Islands responded that "there are justified reasons of exceptional interest that advise the execution of the planned work." The Lomo Gordo II 1 MW Photovoltaic Park, with the refusal of the Cabildo of Gran Canaria, remains stuck unless it goes to court as has happened in Fuerteventura where the Cabildo of that island has blocked the projects even with a declaration of general interest.
