In the south of Gran Canaria, a momentous decision in the political sphere could be related to the development of tourism and urban planning in San Bartolomé de Tirajana. A recent example could be the position and strategy of CC on issues such as sustainable tourism or holiday housing, where decisions regarding land use planning or environmental protection are decisive, as they affect both the local economy and the well-being of its inhabitants. Issues such as the Masaveu cement plant in El Pajar currently divide CC and NC; but everything will come in time.
In 2025, CC in the south of Gran Canaria has on its agenda the preparation of the overtaking of AV-PP for the 2027 elections, a process that the party leader, Alejandro Marichal, has been preparing since he took office on June 17, 2023 in Tunte with a temperature close to 40 degrees. The equation will depend on whether NC lowers its soft piano opposition further as if it were a melody by Frédéric Chopin. If NC finally splits in the south of Gran Canaria, the number of councilors it has in Tirajana may increase in a few months. The photo illustrating this news is a message to the NC bases: "We are normal people, we walk on stones without balance problems, you can also talk to her."
Marichal knows that he cannot speed up the pace because at any moment AV-PP will go up to Monte Carmelo and agree with the PSOE on a mid-term agreement that would force him to go to the Government of the Canary Islands. When a political leader gives up his position, this is usually a metaphor for leadership, alliances and hierarchy in a political context. It is a delegation of responsibilities: my dead now are also your corpses of the future. Or it can simply indicate that the leader has already designated his successor in case of a cold winter. In this case, the leader shows confidence in a councillor-firefighter to carry out an important task: to attract the arrival of new people to the party.
Coalición Canaria, in these cases, tends to balance the attraction of tourist investment with sustainability, proposing a model that seeks to protect natural landscapes and respond to the needs of the local population. This political approach is often at the intersection of economic, social and ecological interests, which requires difficult and strategic decisions to avoid problems such as tourist overcrowding or limited access to living, that is, copying the German residency law, for example. Each 'instant' of decision in this context can have long-term effects and the positioning of CC as a party that tries to convince AV-PP of being committed to local interests above the orders of the group of posh people from Las Palmas and Telde, who try to order Marichal to control the flow of people who transit locally through his government-trench via the imposition of cadavers-providers of intangibles.
