More than 3.000 people gathered last night around the South Park amphitheater in San Fernando de Maspalomas and participated in the countdown to the lighting of the Christmas lights.

The Tenor Quartet Il Divo opened, during its concert last night, the Christmas events program of the San Bartolomé de Tirajana City Council. The song repertoire focused on his well-known album Christmas Tour & Greatest Hits, before the more than 3.000 attendees eager to hear the group live again after a break of months without performing.

After performing two of their most famous Christmas songs, they invited the Mayor, Concepción Narváez, to go on stage. “Welcome to paradise, and thank you for being with us on a special, magical night for the entire municipality of San Bartolomé de Tirajana,” the Mayor declared excitedly.

In his speech, Narváez stressed “Il Divo only performs in internationally renowned squares, that is why they have come to the south of Gran Canaria, to Maspalomas. “This concert is becoming, now and in the future, a tool for tourism promotion worldwide.”

The Mayor highlighted that “we estimate that the turnover generated by this concert is around more than 120.000 euros in sales in local businesses, without assessing the multiplier effects in restaurants and leisure. For that, thanks to Carlos, Urs, Sebastien and David.” Il Divo has been a fundamental part of promoting the campaign “Local commerce invites you to the Il Divo concert” to promote local commerce and quickly reactivate the municipality's economic activity, after the circumstances caused by the pandemic.

But, this concert has also meant that no child is left without a toy this Christmas, "we are going to help the Three Wise Men with the solidarity delivery of toys so that all the children of the municipality have their toy this Christmas."

Next, the street lights of Maspalomas were lit along with the Christmas decoration figures, such as the tree and the squirrel with thousands of bulbs that will tour different places in the municipality. Several members of the corporation, along with the tenors, were in charge of pressing the button that gave access to the ignition. The attendees participated, loudly from the stands, in the countdown of the lighting and, after the applause, the entire South Park of San Fernando de Maspalomas and the streets of Maspalomas were illuminated.

The tenor group continued with the repertoire of Christmas songs, ending this evening with thanks to the municipality of Maspalomas for the warm welcome.
