Next Thursday 14 November at 18: 00 hours, the Conference Room of the Maspalomas Cultural Center will be the setting for the second session of the Citizens' Days on Future and Sustainability, organized by Canary Coalition in San Bartolomé de Tirajana. The presentation, entitled “Gran Canaria’s tourism model: 10 letters from the past”, will be in charge of Antonio Garzon, a graduate in Economics and Business Administration and a diploma in Tourism.
During his speech, Garzón will delve into the milestones and challenges of the island's tourism model, identifying the critical phases in its development and proposing a reflective approach on how to improve current policies. According to the speaker, “A part of Canarian society is calling for a change in the tourism model, but an alternative model has not been defined”, highlighting the need to define a clear path towards sustainability.
The debate will focus on answering key questions: What do we understand by a sustainable tourism model? Is it feasible to transform it without losing competitiveness? Using an original approach, Garzón will propose what messages would be sent to planners of the past if there were a “time mailbox”, in an exercise to understand the mistakes of the past and propose strategies for the future.
This activity is part of a series of three presentations whose purpose is to involve citizens in essential issues for the sustainable development of the municipality. As noted Alejandro Marcihal, local secretary of CC in San Bartolomé de Tirajana:
