The entity was part of the 1st Congress and Fair of Physical Activity and Sport of the Canary Islands

The Consortium will promote spaces for outdoor physical activity in its next projects

The Maspalomas Consortium, an entity owned by the Cabildo de Gran Canaria and the San Bartolomé de Tirajana City Council, participated in the 1st Congress and Fair of Physical Activity and Sport of the Canary Islands, promoted by the Government of the Canary Islands through the Department of Education, Vocational Training, Physical Activity and Sports, which took place at the Canary Islands Fairgrounds (Infecar).

The day included a round table entitled 'Urban planning and sports infrastructure: Creating attractive tourist destinations', where key aspects of the planning and design of multipurpose sports facilities, public and private investments in sports and tourism infrastructure, as well as success stories in tourist destinations were discussed.

The significant impact of sports tourism in Spain was one of the central themes of the congress. In 2023, this sector generated a direct impact of 7.305 billion euros, which underlines the importance of continuing to promote the sustainable development of sports infrastructures that attract tourists and also benefit the sports community of San Bartolomé de Tirajana, as well as other municipalities in Gran Canaria.

The Maspalomas Consortium has prioritised, within one of its rehabilitation plans, different projects with investments aimed at the general transformation of the environment, based on initiatives such as the updating of the San Fernando 'Ernesto Hernández' outdoor swimming pool; and the future projects of the bicycle lane, which will run through Meloneras, and the one that will be carried out in the Oasis of Maspalomas, with the creation of spaces for outdoor physical activity through public-private collaboration with various entities.

The Oasis Palmeral project contemplates the comprehensive improvement of the area, as a space for sports development. This initiative, according to the Social Return on Investment Study of the Oasis Palmeral Project, had a value of 14.567.603,34 euros, which will promote the preservation of the environment, general emotional well-being (physical and mental), and will consolidate active tourism as one of the most important trends in the sports-tourism industry, especially in San Bartolomé de Tirajana, where the quality of life of citizens will be improved.

The participation of the administrative entity in the 1st Congress and Fair of Physical Activity and Sport of the Canary Islands confirms its commitment to accessible and sustainable urban development, and to the creation of areas dedicated to healthy physical activity in tourist areas. This congress offered a space for reflection and collaboration on the positive impact of these policies on local development.
