Fernando Clavijo highlights the value of older people as a social reference and their contribution to the development of the Canary Islands during the II Meeting of Older People, held in the Parque del Sur in San Bartolomé de Tirajana
San Bartolomé de Tirajana hosted the 1.500nd Meeting of Senior Citizens, an event that brought together XNUMX attendees from different parts of Gran Canaria and with representation from all the islands. The event, held in the Parque del Sur, offered a programme packed with activities, from workshops and sports competitions to musical performances and a special screening of the television programme En Clave de Ja. The event was attended by the President of the Canary Islands, Fernando Clavijo; the First Deputy Mayor of San Bartolomé de Tirajana, Alejandro Marichal; and other authorities, such as the Minister of Social Welfare, Candelaria Delgado, and the Minister of Public Works, Pablo Rodríguez.
During his speech, Fernando Clavijo highlighted that “the elderly are a reference for Canarian society of yesterday and today; their experience and their example of life constitute a rich legacy that we must value.” He also underlined the importance of these meetings, which not only recognise the contribution of the elderly to the development of the archipelago, but also create spaces to encourage their active participation and combat unwanted loneliness. Along these lines, Councillor Candelaria Delgado pointed out that events like this are key to strengthening community ties and announced new initiatives such as the Dialogae App, which promotes interaction between generations and reduces the digital divide.
The Second Meeting is part of the actions promoted by the General Directorate of Seniors and Active Participation, aimed at promoting the inclusion and well-being of this group. Among the highlighted measures are the Comprehensive Plan for Care of the Elderly, the development of the Infrastructure Plan for Day Centres and the creation of the Council for the Elderly of the Canary Islands, all aimed at guaranteeing a more inclusive society committed to those who have been fundamental pillars in the construction of the Canary Islands.
