The exhibition, inaugurated this Friday by the second deputy mayor and councillor for the municipal area of Culture, Education, Equality and Youth, Elena Álamo Vega, is part of the intense and varied programme of events that this area of government has been offering during this month of November on the occasion of the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women.

This exhibition initiative, the first with this purpose and characteristics to be organised in the municipality, was promoted by the City Council “with the motivating aim of generating reflective awareness about this social problem and promoting the essential and indispensable value of equal respect to combat violence from classroom training”, says Elena Álamo. To this end, students and teachers from all secondary schools in the municipality were invited to participate.

Violet butterflies

The result of this participation is a visual exhibition made up of more than fifty works in different formats, created individually and collectively. The ceramics and sculptures stand out, but above all the paintings made in mixed techniques, charcoal on paper, acrylics and collages. The predominant and striking shades of violet stand out, as do the numerous works of origami butterflies made in the same colour, which has become the element that articulates the entire exhibition and which identifies women victims of sexist violence on a global level.

It is also noteworthy that most of the drawings in the exhibition are study sketches and portraits of women who embody a common ideal. This thought is expressed in direct messages such as “Love does not hurt”, “My body is not your battlefield” or “The storm tore me apart, but my soul found the strength to blossom”. In relation to the latter, a sculptural assembly of paper, metal and stone flowers stands out, which represents the rebirth of light, beauty and joy after the hermetic and greyish hardness of pain.
