'Feluco', as he was affectionately known, will be remembered not only for his contributions to historical knowledge, but also for his altruistic character and his deep dedication and love for the Villa de Ingenio.
The town of Ingenio is in mourning following the death of Rafael Sánchez Valerón, official chronicler and favourite son of the municipality, teacher, populariser and researcher. Recognised for his tireless work in the compilation and dissemination of local history, Sánchez Valerón leaves a legacy of great value for the collective memory of Ingenio, Gran Canaria and the Canary Islands.
Born and raised in Ingenio, he dedicated his life to making known the events, key figures and traditions that marked the history of the municipality with the aim of reaching new generations and preventing them from being lost in time, but also of provoking memories among his generation. His prolific work included countless publications, research works published in specialized magazines and newspapers, nearly twenty documentaries for Este Canal TV-Ingenio and the giving of lectures in which he always highlighted the historical and cultural wealth of his native land. In addition, he played a fundamental role as official chronicler, a role that he assumed with responsibility, rigor and passion.
During his appointment as Favorite Son of the Town of Ingenio at an event held in 2017, his work in preserving and disseminating the history of the municipality was recognized, as well as his commitment to exalting it and making it known beyond its borders. In 2023, Ingenio paid him an emotional tribute during which colleagues, friends, authorities and neighbors highlighted his altruistic commitment, his passion for research and his effort to perpetuate the historical memory of the town.
The Ingenio Town Council wishes to express its deep sorrow for the loss of this prominent local figure. Its mayor, Vanesa Martín, will declare three days of official mourning as a sign of respect and condolence, during which flags will fly at half-mast.
On the other hand, the Parish of Nuestra Señora de la Candelaria has announced that the Celebration of the Word will take place on Monday, December 2, at 17:5 p.m. at the Ingenio Funeral Home, followed by the burial.
