The City Council holds a meeting with the family of the renowned teacher and trainer Cornelio Ortega Martínez, one of its promoters

The Second Deputy Mayor, Elena Álamo Vega, and the Councillor for Sports, Ramón Suárez Ojeda, have had a heartfelt meeting in Maspalomas with participants and representatives of the organisation of the Blume Gran Canaria Gymnastics Festival, and with the family of the sports teacher and sports coach Cornelio Ortega Martínez, one of its main promoters and drivers, who passed away last November.

The meeting took place within the framework of the celebration of the 62nd Blume Gran Canaria International Festival, which has been taking place since November 29 and which closes on Thursday, December 5, with the participation of some 1.800 athletes from 56 national groups and 42 foreign teams from 15 countries, doubling the international participation of last year. The Blume has an annual demonstration event at the Yumbo Shopping Centre.

The Councillor for Sports, Ramón Suárez, referred to the “emblematic figure” of Cornelio Ortega. He highlighted his active participation in the Blume organising committee since 1960, and also that he was the coach of the first Olympian from this island in artistic gymnastics, as well as the first Canarian world champions and the first Canarian champions of Spain in this sporting modality. “His extensive CV and his contribution to the promotion of sport have left an indelible mark on gymnastics and Canarian sport, reflecting his enormous commitment and passion for gymnastics”, he said.
