The residents of Santa Lucía Casco are invited this Friday, December 6, to elect the Canarian Lucía who, together with the Lucía who will come from the Swedish town of Luleå, will star in the patron saint festivities that will last until Sunday, December 22, with the Romería de los Labradores, one of the most popular in Gran Canaria and the last meeting of pilgrims and party-goers in Gran Canaria.
The mayor of Santa Lucía de Tirajana, Francisco García, encourages “all the residents of the municipality and the rest of the island to come to the Santa Lucía and Labradores festivities, because we have an extensive programme of events from 6 to 22 December, which is designed for people of all ages”. The mayor adds that “the presence of the Swedish Lucía and the Canarian Lucía, the trial of Haragán, the Night of Light or the Parranda de Labradores give these festivities an original and joyful character, and have made them worthy of the title of festivities of National Tourist Interest”.
From 5 to 8 pm this Friday the ballot box will be set up in the library of Santa Lucía Casco to elect the Canarian Lucía who will succeed Raquel Lucía López, who held the reign since December of last year. Also this Friday afternoon, within the act of recognition of our elders, tribute will be paid to Josefina López López, a woman who worked for many years in the bar of her mother, Mariquita López. It is said that in the 50s of the last century, the mejunje, the popular liquor of Santa Lucía, was invented in that bar. In the evening there will be a street party enlivened by 'Nueva Imagen y su bandurria'.
The institutional start of the festivities will be on Saturday 7 December at 19pm with the opening speech that this year will be read by Sandra Castro López, a teacher and librarian who has been a member of the Festival Committee for many years. After the opening speech, the XLVII Caldera de Tirajana Folklore Meeting will be held on the steps of the Town Hall. Afterwards there will be a street party.
On Sunday morning, December 8th, there will be a celebration of Children's Day in the municipal park with bouncy castles and workshops. In the afternoon there will be Scala en Hifi for children and Scala en Hifi for adults.
Night of the light
The festivities will continue on Thursday 12th, the eve of Saint Lucia, with the collection of offerings and a parade. Then the 'Night of Light' will be celebrated, where the festivities of yesteryear will be recreated around a table with timples and guitars, with toasts, concoctions and music from the country. There will be a pilgrimage to the Cross of the Century, then you can see 'The Night of Light, a Journey into the Past' and the day will end at 12 midnight with fireworks.
On Friday the 13th, the big day begins early, with the Diada Floreada at 7 in the morning. From 9 there will be a cattle fair. At 11 in the plenary hall of the Town Hall there will be the official reception by the Municipal Corporation for the Swedish Lucía, the Canarian Lucía and the Festival Committee. Afterwards there will be mass and a procession through the streets of the town. In the afternoon there will be a musical performance.
On Saturday 14th November there will be the Day of the Haragán, with a treasure hunt at 10am, traditional Canarian games at 11am, a popular meal at 14pm and in the afternoon at 5.30am the departure of the Haragán accompanied by papahuevos and the Guiniguada band, a tasting of chocolate with churros and then the trial of the Haragán, one of the most popular and original events of the Santaluceñas festivities. In the evening there will be a party with Grupo Que Chimba, DJ Antonio Boada and Fran Grimón.
On Sunday 15th December there will be 'Santa Lucía al Son' at 14pm in the sports centre with music by DJ Musa, Son pá que suene and Pedro Alonso. There will also be the Karna Solidarity Walk. On Friday 20th at 21pm there will be the Baile de Taifas at the Teleclub, with music by 'Parranda del Cura', 'Parranda el Pajullo' and Parranda 'La Polvajera'. After the dance there will be a serenade through the streets of the town.
On Saturday, December 21st at 12 noon on the sports court there will be a contest called "Where will Marinera shit?". In the evening there will be a concert by 'Los 600' and a party with the Star Music Orchestra and Leyenda Joven, to end with music by DJ Estro and DJ Antonio Boada.
On Sunday 22nd December, at 13pm, the Romería de Los Labradores will begin. Carts and groups from different municipalities will enjoy the end of the patron saint festivities in the last pilgrimage of the year. After the pilgrimage, the party will end with the Verbena del Labrador.
