The fatal accident of a bather in Playa del Inglés, caused by a pick-up vehicle that was serving a kiosk without the corresponding authorization, has intensified the criticism of police unions regarding the lack of security on the beaches of San Bartolomé de Tirajana
Police unions CSIF and STAP have demanded urgent security measures following the fatal accident of a bather in Playa del Inglés, which occurred on Monday while she was resting on the sand. This tragic event has highlighted the lack of surveillance on the beaches of San Bartolomé de Tirajana following the dismantling of the Beach Unit, which previously had 14 specialised officers who patrolled regularly. Currently, surveillance work is “occasional or almost non-existent”, according to union representatives.
The unions have pointed out that this lack of control has led to an increase in problems, such as disorder in the circulation of authorised vehicles, an increase in thefts, the presence of loose animals and the proliferation of street vendors. They have also stressed the importance of complying with the Municipal Ordinance of 2013, which strictly regulates vehicle access to beaches, in order to guarantee the safety of visitors and residents.
In light of this situation, CSIF and STAP have requested three urgent measures from the Councillor for Security: reactivate the Beach Unit with sufficient personnel, implement extraordinary services with volunteer agents and renew police equipment, including the recently acquired quads. The unions warn that beach security, a key element for local tourism, must be an immediate priority.
