Maspalomas celebrates the success of the open day of its Local Police

Numerous families and tourists enjoyed an event that stood out for its educational, recreational and social nature between security forces and citizens.

The San Bartolomé de Tirajana Local Police Open Day turned the parking lot between the Maspalomas Courts and the Local Police Station headquarters into a large open-air public showcase for all the security and emergency forces that operate daily in the southern municipality.

The seasonal display of all-terrain vehicles, motorcycles, fire trucks, drones, dogs trained to fight crime, quads, medical ambulances and all kinds of materials and work tools used by police and security forces allowed the exhibition space to become, between ten in the morning and two in the afternoon, a huge and attractive recreational park for numerous local and foreign families.

The festive day of Constitution Day, with no work for many older people and no school activities for the youngest, was taken advantage of by the local population and also by many tourists on holiday to participate in this one-off event that the Local Police of San Bartolomé de Tirajana has been organising for quite a few years now as a festive gathering to commemorate the Day of its patron saint, the Immaculate Conception, which is celebrated this Sunday.

The demonstration exercises with drones carried out by specialists from the Maspalomas fire department and the local police units of Telde and San Bartolomé de Tirajana caused great excitement among the attendees, although the demonstrations by the canine unit of the Local Police of Santa Cruz de Tenerife were much more in demand and applauded, as they took part in the event with their dogs Teno, Jaks and Lukas as the main protagonists.

If last year it was the take-off, flight and landing display of two Air Rescue Service (SAR) helicopters that aroused the greatest passion among those attending the event, this year it was the drug detection drills in which the three Tenerife dogs took part that attracted the majority of the public, especially the youngest ones, who were expectant and incredulous at the demonstration of agility and training offered by the dogs throughout their performance.

For the little ones, this open day of the Local Police has become an annual event not to be missed because it allows them to become enthusiastic officers, firemen and rescuers for a day, handling whistles, steering wheels, handlebars and accelerators. Getting into the vehicles, especially motorcycles, and sounding the horns and sirens is for them an unusual adventure of uniforms, lights and noises.

In addition to the local police displays from San Bartolomé de Tirajana, Telde, Santa Cruz de Tenerife, the National Police, the Civil Guard, the Red Cross, Civil Protection, the Maspalomas Fire Department and the Autonomous Police, this year agents from the Port Authority of Las Palmas and also Environmental Agents from the Cabildo of Gran Canaria joined the event. The Red Cross volunteer and the oldest member of Civil Protection in the municipality, Miguel González Almeida, aged 64, collaborated again. “This event is very useful for people to learn about the emergency services provided in the municipality,” he said.

The organisation took personal souvenir photos which were given to around 400 families; it gave away commemorative T-shirts for the little ones with the slogan 'Mas+patrulla'; it gave them certificates of participation in the event. During the event, trophies were also given to the winners of the various table tournaments held internally by the members of the Local Police.

The second deputy mayor and councillor for the Presidency, Elena Álamo Vega, congratulated the organisers for their involvement and valued “the opportunity for enjoyment and coexistence that this event offers, with the aim of bringing the local police and security forces closer to the population of the municipality”, she said.
