The Fair returns after its mandatory absence in 2020 due to the pandemic, and will do so in the permanent 1.160 square meter tent in Plaza Pérez Galdós, Arguineguín, between 10:00 a.m. and 14:00 p.m.
The sixth Mogán Avocado Fair will take place this Sunday, December 5, in the town of Arguineguín where, of course, the star product will be the avocado, of which the municipality's farmers will put four thousand kilos on sale. This was announced this morning by the Councilor for Rural Development, Ernesto Hernández, at the official presentation of the event held on a farm in Barranco de Arguineguín.
Among avocado trees, the details of what will be the sixth edition of the Mogán Avocado Fair have been announced, an activity with which the Mogán City Council wishes to highlight the municipality's agricultural sector and promote excellent products. quality that arises from it. To this end, the Fair also has the collaboration of the Cabildo of Gran Canaria and Cajasiete, the latter represented at today's event by Fernando de Miguel, manager of the Cajasiete Agricultural Unit, and by Federico Hernández, direct from the Arguineguín Office of that entity.
The Fair returns after its mandatory absence in 2020 due to the pandemic, and will do so in the permanent 1.160-square-meter tent in Plaza Pérez Galdós, Arguineguín, between 10:00 a.m. and 14:00 p.m. Councilor Hernández stressed “that the Fair cannot be held with the dimensions of previous years due to the health crisis, but we were clear that we wanted to recover it in the format that was possible because it is necessary to recover normality, and because the sector agricultural needs support.”
The mayor has stressed the importance of following the instructions that will be repeated through the public address system during the event, such as the mandatory use of a mask, respecting the circuit established within the venue – which will be signposted and will be one-way – and avoiding crowds. . In addition, capacity will be controlled with personnel at the entrance and exit of the Fair.
Hernández has indicated that in total there will be 15 farmers distributed in 11 stands, in which attendees will find the so-called 'moganero green gold'. The main varieties that will be put on sale will be the 'strong' one, Pinkerton, Orotava and the hybrids.
It is worth mentioning that up to 22 varieties of this fruit are produced throughout the year in Mogán and that its cultivation occupies more than 20 hectares, which makes it, along with mango, the main agricultural production. Of this last product, 2.000 kilos will also be on sale, mainly of the Kate variety. Likewise, there will be Washington oranges, more popularly known as 'navel' oranges, as well as other seasonal fruits and vegetables.
This edition of the fair, all stands will be located within the area marked on the tent. So, in addition to the farmers, there will be those of processed products such as cheese, honey, jams, oil, wine, artisanal cider, bread and sweets. Local artisans will also have a section on the premises.
On the other hand, Hernández has indicated that this edition will not have a gastronomic area for security reasons. “With the size of our Fair it would have been very complicated and we have been very careful when taking the measures for the development of the event,” he stated.
Regarding the reduction in the number of positions compared to previous editions, he explained that it is due to the fact that there is less production since it was affected by the heat waves at the beginning of summer. This has caused many farmers to not have enough specimens to participate in the Fair at this time. However, Hernández has assured that this "does not reduce the quality of the offer at the Avocado Fair." The Councilor for Traffic and Transportation, Víctor Gutiérrez, also attended the presentation of the event.
