A week into the traveller register: Big Brother panic in the UK

MASPALOMAS24H Tuesday, December 10 of 2024

The main British newspapers have not overlooked the controversial measure this past week and the nickname “Big Brother” has already taken hold in our main market.

“New Spanish rules will make it much harder for Britons to holiday in the country,” was the headline in The Sun, the most widely read newspaper in the UK, in the article explaining the new traveller register that came into effect on 2 December, exactly one week ago.

However, it has not been the only media outlet to report on the controversial measure to alert British tourists, the main source of tourists to the islands. The Telegraph and The Independent, other main newspapers in the country, coined the term “Big Brother” for the law due to the amount of data that tourists must provide upon arrival in the country.

The articles strongly criticize the new measure and point out with the typical sarcasm of the English press the failure of this new method on the day of its debut. In some articles, such as in The Sun, they even include a breakdown entitled “Anti-tourist measures are devastating the main tourist areas; a text in which they address measures related to tourism in several European countries and in which they include the Canary Islands in the following terms: “The Canary Islands are also considering adopting measures to regulate the number of tourists and apply a tourist tax”

These headlines have also reached the political sector in Spain, as various figures opposed to the government have highlighted in recent days how the British tabloids have echoed this new measure; calling the image that a country so dependent on tourism has given to its main source market with the implementation of this new law “infamy”, “irresponsibility” or simply “incredible”.
