Maspalomas24h Tuesday, December 10 of 2024

The fire occurred on Monday afternoon and mobilized several personnel from the Arinaga fire station and Maritime Rescue.

The fire that broke out in the hold of the ship “Langeland” has been controlled, thus ending the emergency. The Gran Canaria Fire Department has withdrawn from the scene after securing the area, while the Port Police will remain on guard. The ship's crew will remain on standby, and normality will be restored in the port.

The residents of Arinaga had a real scare on Monday afternoon when they saw a large column of smoke on the dock next to the seafront avenue in the coastal area. A column of smoke caused by the fire of a ship docked at the dock and which required the intervention of several fire brigades from the nearby Arinaga park.

A Maritime Rescue helicopter also joined in the work to verify the situation from the air. The characteristic wind from Arinaga caused the column of smoke to move southwards and could be seen from Vecindario and various points in Agüimes.

The fire started in the hold of the Portuguese-flagged freighter 'Langeland' and, according to authorities, occurred while the crew was handling scrap metal. Part of the crew had to be evacuated for safety reasons while some other members of the freighter's staff collaborated with the firefighters in the extinguishing tasks.
