From 26 to 31 December, more than 300 international athletes will compete in four intense days, culminating with the City Race at the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria.
The official presentation took place in the press room of the Department of Tourism, with the participation of the Councillor for Tourism of the Cabildo de Gran Canaria, Carlos Álamo; the Councillor for Sports of the island corporation, Aridany Romero; the manager of the Municipal Institute for the Promotion of Physical Activity and Sport (IMD), Eloy García; the director of Orientación Canarias, José Luis Echevarría; and the technical director of GCOM, Úlises Ortíz.

The Councillor for Tourism of the Cabildo de Gran Canaria, Carlos Álamo, pointed out that “this sporting event highlights the attributes of the island as a tourist destination”, adding that “it also attracts the interest of family tourists, those who seek sustainable experiences and wish to discover the natural and scenic treasures of our privileged geography”. In this sense, he pointed out that “tourism and sport align to generate a positive impact”.
Aridany Romero, for his part, welcomed the fact that “such diverse events are taking place away from the asphalt and the city where people of different ages meet”, also ensuring that “GCOM allows us to continue to delve deeper into the benefits of the island through physical activity and sport, thus benefiting the local economy”.
The IMD manager, Eloy García, stated that “the event organisers must be congratulated for their commitment to active tourism initiatives”, acknowledging that “IMD is delighted to collaborate with events such as GCOM, since these activities allow us to develop skills beyond the usual, and which will also pass through our municipality, such as La Ballena Park and the ULPGC Tafira Campus”.
Ulises Ortiz, technical director of the race, explained that “there will be a notable presence of international runners, since in countries such as Finland, Norway and Sweden, orienteering is the king of sports.” He also shared that, like last year, the experience of holding a night race will be repeated “this time in Agüimes, which will add spectacular moments and increase the difficulty of the competition” and also highlighted the inclusive modality of the Spanish TRAIL-O Orienteering League, underlining “its importance and relevance in the event by bringing the experience of physical activity and orienteering to many more people.”
Finally, the director of Orientación Canarias, José Luis Echevarría, highlighted the importance of “having institutions that share our vision and make it possible for these types of events to take place”, at the same time, he emphasized that “GCOM is an international event, a leader throughout Europe during these dates, and is characterized by being a test that bets on sustainability through such important collaborators as Guaguas Municipales, who will promote tourism and the mobility of the runners around the city, as well as local products and electric mobility”.
