José María Goenaga and Aitor Arregi, creators of 'Marco', 'La trinchera infinita', 'Handia', 'Loreak', are filming their sixth feature-length fiction film: 'Maspalomas'. Filming will take place in various locations in the Basque Country and the Canary Islands. This is an Irusoin, Moriarti and Maspalomas pelikula AIE production, with the participation of the ICAA, the Basque Government, RTVE and EITB. Bteam Pictures will distribute the film in Spain and Film Factory will handle international sales.
The film, shot in 35mm, stars Jose Ramon Soroiz, Nagore Aranburu, Kandido Uranga, Zorion Egileor and Kepa Errasti. With a budget of five million euros, 'Maspalomas' received 1,2 million euros in the second ICAA general aid procedure for 2023.
'Maspalomas' tells the story of Vicente, an openly homosexual elderly man who, when he is admitted to a nursing home, decides to come back into the closet. With 'Maspalomas', Los Moriarti return to the intimate style of films such as '80 egunean' and 'Loreak'. “Maspalomas is a film that aims to reflect on psychological (and physical) confinement, on erased identities, on how difficult it is to assert yourself in some environments when you don't know where to start and on how easy it can be to lose what you've already conquered,” says Jose Mari Goenaga, also the author of the original script.
