The president of the Port Authority of Las Palmas highlights the historical and tourist value of the lighthouse, “a landmark in the municipality, on the island and throughout the Canary Islands, which this year celebrates 140 years since the first stone was laid.”
Calzada was accompanied by the mayor of San Bartolomé de Tirajana, Marco Aurelio Pérez, and the first deputy mayor, Alejandro Marichal.
Maspalomas is the first of the 14 lighthouses that Beatriz Calzada will visit over the next few months
The president of Puertos de Las Palmas, Beatriz Calzada, accompanied by the mayor of San Bartolomé de Tirajana, Marco Aurelio Pérez, and the first deputy mayor of this municipality, Alejandro Marichal, visited this Wednesday the Maspalomas Lighthouse, declared a Site of Cultural Interest and which this year celebrates 140 years since its construction began.

The visit, the first that Calzada has made to a lighthouse, is part of the president's roadmap, which will include visiting in the coming months all these port infrastructures that provide maritime signalling services and for which the Port Authority is responsible.
Beatriz Calzada stressed that the aim of the visit is to see first-hand the management and maintenance of the lighthouses, as well as to learn about each one of them and their history. In this regard, she pointed out: “The Maspalomas Lighthouse is a reference point for the history of San Bartolomé de Tirajana, Gran Canaria and the whole of the Canary Islands, but it is also a very important reference point for tourism. We have the responsibility to maintain it and take care of it so that it continues to be a reference point and shows the history of our land so that we do not forget our past,” she added.
The president announced that in January she will visit the La Isleta Lighthouse, and later the Sardina de Gáldar Lighthouse, until completing the 14 lighthouses that the Port Authority has in the province of Las Palmas.
Marco Aurelio Pérez said that “the Maspalomas Lighthouse, in addition to being a maritime symbol, is a place of reference. Its construction model is replicated in other smaller lighthouses, although this one is a representative of all the others.”
Alejandro Marichal praised the Maspalomas Lighthouse and its 140th anniversary since the laying of the first stone, and thanked Beatriz Calzada for the recent agreements that the San Bartolomé de Tirajana Town Council has reached with the Port Authority for the authorisation that will allow the completion of the works on the promenade around the lighthouse. “The work, which will be carried out through the Maspalomas Tourist Consortium, exceeds one million euros. With it we will complete the Meloneras promenade and improve this space that is so important for Maspalomas Costa Canaria,” he said.
